Teaching
Teaching a child to read and write successfully is the single most important job of early education. It is difficult to overestimate its importance to a child’s intellectual growth and emotional feeling of self worth. Falling behind in this key area destines a child to fall behind in school, simply because reading and writing are the tools required for future success in all subjects.
With your child’s interest as my focus I use:
Educational philosophy
I have yet to find a student who did not
Do better work and put forth greater effort
Under a spirit of approval than
Under a spirit of criticism.
Consulting
Helena will navigate your child’s education.
IEP, The Individualized Education Plan: Helena Hughes is conversant with writing and implementing IEP plans. She regularly attends and participates in IEP meetings at public schools. It has been documented that you are 6 times more likely to have a successful IEP plan in place and implemented if you have a qualified educator working with you who is present at the meeting and actively advocating for your child.
School and teacher conferences: Helena Hughes will attend these meetings, actively advocate for your child, and provide progress reports for these meetings.
Psychologists: Helena Hughes is available to consult with psychologists and has a list of psychologists and speech & language therapists available for referral upon request.

With your child’s interest as my focus I use:
- Creative: Tutorials are designed to engage each individual student. They employ a variety of fun, quick moving, and inventive games, fun prizes, and confidence-building strategies.
- Fluency and Intonation: These two are targeted, as it is now recognized that they directly impact comprehension.
- Vocabulary Strategies: When students are not enthusiastic readers they automatically fall behind in acquiring new vocabulary. Students with poor vocabulary acquisition by third grade have declining text comprehension scores in fourth and fifth grade. A multifaceted approach is used in teaching vocabulary. This encompasses individual word instruction, exposure to text, and generative word knowledge.
- Comprehension: I employ a variety of techniques, such as visualizing and modeling comprehension as the basis for writing the five paragraph essay.
- Proof Reading and Writing Skills: Your student learns to automatically check their own work for punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors.
